The Kirtan Wallah Foundation returned to the beautiful Kagyu Thubten Choling Monastery for a benefit concert.
Proceeds will support women practicing in the traditional Tibetan Buddhist three-year retreat at Kagyu Thubten Choling Monastery. The cloistered retreat creates a unique environment for devoting all the energies of body, speech and mind to the transformative meditation practices of the Vajrayana, with the intention to free all sentient beings from suffering. The women in the current retreat have completed almost a year and a half, but do not have enough funds for the full retreat. They are a strong and determined group of meditators who aspire to pervade the world with compassion.
The three-year retreat is a traditional program of intensive meditation practices intended for serious students who wish to train in the core teachings and practices of the Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhisim. The three-year retreat was formally instituted in the nineteenth century by the great master Jamgon Kongtrul Lodrö Taye, and includes four meditation sessions a day and group chanting in the morning and evening.
The three year and three month timeframe derives from teachings in the Kalachakra Tantra regarding the time required to transform karmic energy into wisdom energy when engaged in undistracted meditation with proper view.
At the heart of the retreat are the practices of Mahamudra and the Six Yogas of Naropa . The related curriculum includes the main preliminary practices, guru yogas, deity mandalas and mind instructions of the Karma Kagyu tradition, as well as practices from the Shangpa Kagyu and Nyingma traditions.
